Cough With Phlegm

Phlegm, a gelatinous white substance also known as mucus, may be coughed up when the lung is irritated. This is a condition known as a 'wet cough'. Respiratory illnesses, lung irritants like tobacco smoke, and vigorous exercise may also cause or aggravate this condition. It is rarely serious, but a persistent wet cough should be examined by a medical professional.
